Is Hornsby Shire Council Ignoring it’s Own Signage

The survival of the Sydney Turpentine-Ironbark Forest depends on all of us. Yet Hornsby Shire Council is not listening to its own advice.

Westleigh Park contains Critically Endangered Ecological Communities and an Endangered Ecological Community. The Sydney Turpentine-Ironbark Forest Critically Endangered Ecological Community has been listed and protected by both the NSW and Federal governments.

The Sydney Turpentine-Ironbark Forest does not grow anywhere else in the world except in the Sydney metropolitan area. Today only 0.5% of the original forest area remains. In accordance with the Biodiversity Conservation Regulation 2017 it has been determined that:

“It is facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the immediate future”.

Hornsby Shire Council know, in fact their own signs say “that they have a legal responsibility” to protect the Critically Endangered Ecological Community, Sydney Turpentine-Ironbark Forest (STIF). Where are these signs at the Westleigh Park site, which contains a sizable area of STIF? Why is council refusing to follow its own advice?

Please please save Westleigh Park!
I have recently completed a course in Conservation and Land Management at Tafe
And am surprised that Council is not supporting you in this venture! I often walk there in the Blue Gum forest area just passed the fire station and meet unorthorised bikers ruining the flora!!

Hi Marysia,

Thanks for your support. Yes it is surprising and sad that Council have failed to protect these critically endangered areas for 6 years, due to ‘political’ pressure. Some things are just more important than a few votes.

Where do the local Councillors and the Mayor stand on this issue???
So much for Hornsby “ The Bushland Suburb” !!!

Great question Geoff, Save Westleigh Park spoke at the last council meeting and when it came to the issue of tracks through Critically Endangered Ecological Communities, there was deafening silence!
